Whyte Avenue tattoo shop closed over health concerns

Alberta health is calling on anyone tattooed or pierced at a Whyte Avenue shop this year to get tested for disease.

Zipp’s Tattoo & Museum, 10028 82 Avenue, was ordered closed after Alberta Health Services became aware of their practices.

Among the infractions, according to the Closure Order:

-Instruments being used on clients were not in a clean or sterile condition

-There was inadequate antiseptic treatment of the skin prior to performing the procedure

-The operator indicated that he has been recently tattooing animals in the studio.

“The lack of standard sterilization practices of reusable instruments and safety precautions can cause a risk for disease transmission of hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV,” said a release. “Anyone who has had any body art or piercing done at Zipp’s Tattoo & Museum since January 2009 is asked to call 780-413-4977 for further advice.”

Residents with any health-related concerns can call Health Link Alberta to speak to a registered nurse 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at 780-408-LINK (5465) or outside the local calling area, toll free at 1-866-408-LINK (5465).

A&E Tattoo Highway star offers free tattoo; Twitter him

Twitter freaks and tattoo lovers, hear ye, A&E and Tattoo Highway are offering up free Twitter tatts, the catch is you have to Twitter your request direct to Thomas Pendelton, the host of the show.

Twitter freaks and tattoo lovers, hear ye, A&E and Tattoo Highway are offering up free Twitter tatts, the catch is you have to Twitter your request direct to Thomas Pendelton, the host of the show.

The Iranian uprising over the elections is being Twittered by irate citizens protesting the results, and John Mayer is Twittering his thoughts from the nearest bathroom. Yes, Twitter is not a passing fad. People are so enamored with the social networking site that they are clamoring to tattoo their twitter names on their bodies.

Maybe even Jesus_H_Christ will want his name tattooed on his neck.

Thomas Pendelton, tattoo artist and the star of A&E’s “Tattoo Highway” reality TV series (A&E, Wednesdays at 10PM), recently offered to tattoo a twitter user’s handle free of charge.

After extending the proposal to his Twitter followers, a tidal wave of tweets and emails from tattoo-crazy fans wanting to permanently brand themselves with their Twitter handle washed over him.

Pendelton will narrow the field of would-be twits for tat-tweeters by making them jump through a couple of hoops:

1. Follow @ThomasPendelton on Twitter (http://twitter.com/ThomasPendelton)
2. Tweet @ThomasPendelton with Hash Tag #A&EWed10 stating why (and where!) you want your Twitter handle permanently inked onto your body
3. Tweet about this, and have your friends chime in on your behalf using that #A&EWed10 hash tag. Feel free to share a photo along with your request.

Thomas will tweet about the lucky follower who will get inked before the next episode of Tattoo Highway airs this Wednesday on A&E at 10pm.

Reebok to Marcin Gortat: Jordan Tattoo Won’t Fly

marcin gortatORLANDO — There is good and bad to the bright lights of the NBA Finals — even for a relatively unknown backup center like Marcin Gortat of the Orlando Magic.

Gortat, in just his second NBA season, and the only player in the league from Poland, becomes a restricted free agent this summer. He has helped himself immensely with consistent performances during this playoff run, attracting attention from other teams around the league.

He also received an uncomfortable phone call last weekend from Reebok, with whom he has a shoe contract. Representatives of the company were not happy to see a picture of him from Game 1 in a Polish newspaper that prominently displayed his Michael Jordan/Nike logo tattoo on his lower right leg.

Reebok asked him either to wear higher socks tonight to cover up the tattoo, or to apply makeup so it will not be noticed through the rest of the NBA Finals.

“They called and said I had to do something about it, but that ain’t going to happen,” Gortat said after Tuesday morning’s workout.

Gortat tattoo”I’ve been wearing it 4-5 years now, and it helped me get to the NBA,” said Gortat. “They didn’t say anything about it when I signed the contract, so it’s not going anywhere. I don’t think they are paying me enough to take it off.”

Gortat would not say how much his Reebok contract is worth beyond the shoes he is provided to wear, but he said it was minimal compared to what the stars of the league receive.

“I’ve heard from other people that even other players, if they don’t know my name, they know I’m the big white guy with the Jordan tattoo,” he said. “I like that. Reebok will have to get used to that.”gortat jordan tattoo

Gortat has averaged just 12 minutes a game through the playoffs, averaging 3.3 points and 3.5 rebounds as a backup to Dwight Howard. But his role in the Finals is becoming more significant because the Magic also are using him as a backup power forward, helping against the Lakers big front line.

Gortat has averaged 18 minutes, four points and 5.5 rebounds in the two losses against the Lakers. He expects to play even more Tuesday night in Game 3, hoping to specifically slow down Lakers sixth man Lamar Odom, who has been huge in the Finals. Odom has averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds against the Magic.

“I promise you, he won’t score as much. He won’t get as many rebounds if I’m out there against him,” Gortat said. “Other guys on our team have to stop Kobe Bryant. I have to stop Lamar Odom. I can do that. I’m supposed to come off the bench and stop him. If I do that, it will give us a better chance to win.”

Is The Negative Stigma On Tattoos Diminishing?

Whether the tattoo community likes it or not they are always taking criticism from people. Some people just don’t understand that tattoos are a good positive thing and they can’t seem to be past the negative aspect of tattoos. Which if these tattoo people would educate themselves on tattoos and the tattoo community they would find out that these awful rough and tumble, hoodlums are actually a great asset to the community. Several tattoo parlors or tattoo studios as some like to be called have charity events going on at the places of business and they raise money all the time for great cause.

Slowly year by year the negative astigmatism that is associated with tattoos has started to diminish. Because of this several baby boomers are heading out to their local tattoo parlor or tattoo studio to get the ink they have always wanted but felt society would not except them because of it. So why the reason for baby boomers all of a sudden getting inked? Well some tattoo artist say it’s because they felt it wasn’t social acceptable 15 to 20 years ago and a lot of them are facing retirement now and just don’t care what anyone thinks. Several tattoo parlors are reporting that they are seeing a rise in people between the age of 40 and their mid 50’s getting their first tattoos. This piece of news makes sense especially since a poll that was conducted in 2008 revealed that about 20 percent of adults between the age of 40 and 64 reported having one or more tattoos. Another reason these age group is starting to get tattoos this late in life is because people are becoming more comfortable and curious about body art.

Angelina Gets A New Tattoo

Angelina Jolie has a new tattoo, and no one else seems to have noticed.

When Jolie walked the red carpet in Cannes in an asymmetrical backless dress with partner Brad Pitt, the crowds went crazy and photographers zoomed in for shots of the well-documented Khmer script on her left shoulder blade and the tiger on her lower back, two of her many well-documented tattoos.

But perhaps her best known is the six lines on her left arm with the longitudes and latitudes of the birthplaces of each of her children. Those six lines, existing on skin where an almost-gone tattoo tribute to ex-husband Billy Bob Thornton used to dominate, are now partially framed by curving lines that form a right angle.

The Infamous Tramp Stamp

I want to address the issue of the “tramp stamp,” because I hear this term more and more these days and it’s really starting to get on my nerves.

I’ve gotten several emails from readers wanting to know if this term is “true.” It refers to lower back tattoos on women, and it suggests that the women who wear them are promiscuous. But the deeper connotations of this word get much uglier than that.

The says this of women who wear these lumbar tattoos:

“Those chicks with tramp stamps are the kinds of girls you take home to bang. Don’t get into relationships with them because they are often immature gold digging sluts who sleep with everyone. Oh yeah, make sure you use a rubber because you don’t want to end up with chlamydia trachoma (which 1 in 20 women have between the ages of 14-39 according to the center of disease control… probably much higher if they have a tramp stamp considering the scientific coloration [sic] between sluttiness and tramp stamps). Also, if they pop out a baby (which they often do), they may have issues getting epidurals through their tattoos in the lower back.”

The above statement is such a great example of ignorance gone wild. Someone has a strong opinion about something, based on pure ignorance or prejudice, and they spread their mindless ramblings as fact. And of course, Urban Legends spread faster than wildfires, so the next thing you know everyone believes a load of bull and continues to pass it on as solid truth.

Where did this term come from?
It’s not really clear when it started becoming a popular phrase to describe lower back tattoos on women, but it’s been much more prevalent in the past year or so. BME suggests that it originally referred to simple tribal and Celtic designs, because they appear to have been “stamped” onto the skin. Now, however, it can refer to any lower back ink.

Are the rumors true?
So, is it true that women who wear lower back tattoos are more promiscuous than those without? Sure, some of them. And some women with long hair are more promiscuous than those with short hair. And some women with blue eyes are more likely to do drugs than women with brown eyes. These so-called scientific studies that supposedly prove a correlation between lower back tattoos and promiscuity are neither scientific nor accurate. Granted, women who are already promiscuous may choose to get a lower back tattoo, but that street doesn’t necessarily go both ways. It would be like saying that since rabid dogs bite, then all dogs who bite are rabid!

But that doesn’t mean there isn’t any connection between lower back tattoos and sexuality. I believe that it’s fair to say that women who get (and display) tattoos on the sensual lower curvature of their backs – instead of covering it with high waistbands and low shirts – are expressing sensuality and sexual confidence. And I say good for them!

Women have long been oppressed whenever they have attempted to assert themselves sexually. Showing a little lower back, with or without ink, is no different than showing skin on other sensual areas of the body. In the 1800s, a woman would be considered immodest if she showed her shoulders or legs. The shocking pinups of the early 20th century, featuring bathing beauties in swimsuits that are laughably modest today, were considered positively pornographic. Even in the mid-1900s, “good girls” never showed cleavage! Fortunately, times have changed and women are freer to show skin without raising as many eyebrows, but that doesn’t mean it never happens.

Attracting Attention
If you have a lower back tattoo, and if you choose to display it by wearing low-rise jeans or crop tops, you do have to accept the fact that you are going to attract attention. But there is no shame in that as long as you can handle it. Asserting yourself as a strong, independent, sexually confident woman means being able to carry yourself in a dignified manner despite negative reactions.

One man joked about this on a message board, saying:

“I see nothing wrong with tattoos, so as long they don’t cover their entire body with them. But you know what I find real funny? It’s when a girl has a tattoo on the small of her back and wears a mini skirt or low cut jeans with a top that exposes the tattoo… when I, ahem… ADMIRE… her artwork on her back, she starts complaining about how I’m like all the men who undress with their eyes.”

Inappropriate Comments
If you don’t want people to notice your tattoos, don’t display them. Simple as that. But showing a lower back tattoo, however, does not mean that it is an open invitation for others to make sexual comments. Just because a woman decides to assert herself sexually does not mean she is sexually promiscuous! There is a distinct difference that needs to be made between assertiveness and licentiousness!

So, while it may be true that there are those out there who will judge women with lower back tattoos and refer to them as “tramp stamps,” there is no truth to the claim that these women are any more promiscuous than anyone else. If you are a woman wanting a lower back tattoo, go for it. If you’re concerned about the people who will judge you for it, either toughen up or cover up. And if you’re one of the ignorant people spreading the “tramp stamp” rumors, well – consider yourself educated.

Before and After

Here’s another tattoo fix by jack where he recently reworked a pair of swallows for a client who requested they be cleaner and brighter. They looked so nice we thought we’d show everyone. (P.S. In case you were wondering, these are straight from the camera, no editing involved, I promise.)

Here’s what it looks like before and after.

Tattoo Combination

A good option for those wanting a tribal design, yet also wanting some sort of modern design, or for those wanting a strong tattoo which combines various styles, can be to combine both modern and tribal into one tattoo. This can be done with equal emphasis, or with more emphasis on one style and less on the other.

Matter of fact many individuals have taken their existing tattoo’s and have elaborated on them by adding tribal design to the outsides. The tattoo becomes more pronounced and the tribal tattooing can serve as a sort of frame for the older tattoo.

This can be done with a more modern tattoo as well with great results. Take your modern design and envision it surrounded, or framed, by tribal. Have it drawn out to see how they work together. Pick a good design that will work well alongside the tribal design. And be sure to pick a large enough design. Heavy tribal designs can bury designs if there not large enough.

Or your design could be incorporate more tribal so it stands on it’s own, not just acting as an outer frame.

Generally it’s best to incorporate more modern design styles to tribal tattoos. Taking an old school tattoo and adding tribal doesn’t always work, and strays away from the strength of the traditional look. An nude lady old school sailor tat for instance, stands strong on it’s own. Mixing tribal in the mix could be a major mismatch. But you can try experimenting with different traditional styles and see if something does work for you personally.
